On the banks of the Mara River on the northern boundary of the game reserve, Olonana has been developed in conjunction with the local Maasai community to help promote tourism in an untouched area. No other lodge in the Mara offers such a close cultural experience with the Maasai.
Accommodation
The 14 bush pavilions are built on platforms with large private viewing decks overlooking the river. Luxuriously appointed, they feature en suite facilities which include twin sinks, shower and toilet. The sleeping areas include two queen size beds, dressing mirrors, writing desk, and bedside tables, all locally made by village craftsmen. On arrival guests are greeted by their personal valet, who will take care of such bush essentials as bringing early morning tea and turning down the beds at night.
Facilities
Drinks are served on a long sundeck, which runs parallel to the river, in full view of hippo and other game that lives in this stretch of water. The evening atmosphere is that of a dinner party, warm and convivial gatherings of guests and guides discussing the day's sightings. Full day game drives in the Masai Mara will see the most game and are especially rewarding for photographers. For many the quieter pleasures of walking through the bush with a Maasai tracker, seeing Kenya’s ‘Little Five’, becomes the highlight of their trip, and Olonana's involvement with the local community means you have also got the chance to learn more about the Maasai culture and way of life.
