The Climate Change Challenge
The unique ecosystems that make up our most important destinations are under immediate threat from the changing world. Abercrombie & Kent has always been crucially involved in conservation issues, but in 2007 intends, in partnership with the charity 'Friends of Conservation', to raise money for specific projects worldwide.
Throughout A&K's 40 years of operation, the environment has been a central priority. Since Geoffrey Kent pioneered his first Kenyan safari, tourism has always been seen as a way of protecting and preserving the natural world.
As A&K's destinations portfolio widens, our involvement with the environment is even more vital. From Antarctica to the Himalayas, fragile ecosystems are under increasing threat, with the most crucial challenge coming from global warming.
It is estimated that by the year 2020, there will be no glaciers left on Mount Kilimanjaro. Rising ocean temperatures are killing coral reefs - surface temperatures are increasing to unprecedented levels, killing off more than 90% of the coral in many areas. Polar ice caps are melting - in 2002, the northern section of the Larsen B ice shelf, an area of 1,250 square miles, disintegrated in just 35 days.
How We Hope to Make a Difference
- For every holiday booked in 2007, A&K will donate the equivalent cost of planting and caring for an indigenous seedling in Africa.
- For every 'Green Itinerary' booked in 2007, A&K will calculate and pay to offset carbon emissions on your behalf.
- You can make a donation to offset your carbon emissions by calling Friends of Conservation on 020 7603 5024.
- Greetings Cards, based on the some of the best wildlife images from the famous photographers Gerald and Marc Hoberman, are available for order and all proceeds from the sale of these cards will go to the Climate Change Challenge. To order your cards, download the greetings card order form here.
All donations gratefully received from you will support these projects. Call Friends of Conservation on 020 7603 5024 if you’d like to help.
