Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) is a nonprofit organisation with the goal to provide long-term support for existing natural ecosystems to ensure that human populations, flora and fauna continue to survive and coexist successfully. A&K and AKP have pioneered a new form of community development assistance by forging informal partnerships with grassroots initiatives and compassionate travellers. Sustainable tourism is an key element to AKP's work, fitting within our four main commitments: education, conservation, health and enterprise.

Abercrombie & Kent, Philanthropy

We educate local people to protect the environment for their benefit and future generations. In addition we promote sustainable tourism, encouraging travel that respects locals as well helping visitors understand fragile ecosystems so they can continue to thrive.

We take a proactive role in protecting endangered species and sustain the balance between endangered species, fragile ecosystems and economic opportunity. Reduce the impact of climate change.

AKP supports water, sanitation and other health-related requirements to communities in need. Educating about health is also an important aspect to AKP's work.

We support the growth of economic opportunity in our partner communities through training, income generating activities and other innovations to positively impact livelihoods.

"Abercrombie & Kent introduced wood-saving stoves to the Masai. Total rejection. Only when the Masai learned that the stoves would conserve resources and reduce wood collection by 70% did they become interested. Moral: Education is the key to alleviating poverty."

Jorie Butler Kent, A&K Vice Chairman

History of Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy

AKP traces its beginnings back to 1982 when A&K Vice Chairman, Jorie Butler Kent, and Founder, Chairman and CEO, Geoffrey Kent, both passionate about protecting the globe, raised funds for conservation efforts within the Maasai Mara National Reserve. This was just the start of the global social and environmental commitments that AKP has gone on to support.

AKP has been an extremely important part of A&K over the years, seeing staff continue to donate not only financial support but also their time and labour. A&K’s many offices around the world support projects to benefit their communities, with the constant vision for wildlife and people to survive and co-exist successfully.

Jorie Butler Kent continues to guide the AKP. Born in Chicago and travelling from a young age, Jorie has always seen the importance of protecting and helping the world. In 1999 she won the Chevron Conservation Award for helping preserve Kenya’s and Tanzania’s wildlife and habitat.
