In a world of cultural variety and intense contrasts, there's nowhere quite like Africa to take your breath away. Across this expansive land, 54 diverse countries vie for attention: from the barren deserts of the Kalahari and Sahara to the dark, impenetrable forests of Uganda, and the fertile grasslands of the savannah in between. Wild, untamed and profoundly uplifting, everything from its natural beauty to its deeply troubled history is tangible. The canvas upon which Africa is painted is an invigorating blend of history and colour: on this continent where humans first came into existence you'll find customs and traditions so far removed from our western existence they could be from another planet, seen in the incredible rock-hewn churches of Lalibela in Ethiopia and the sacred burial sites in Madagascar. But this is all part of Africa's soul-lifting, life-enriching charm.
Not forgetting, of course, the animal kingdom. From Zambia to Zimbabwe, safari vehicle to traditional mokoro, the wildlife of Africa brings the beauty of its natural landscapes to life. The heart-pounding energy of the wildebeest as it plunges through rivers and savannahs during the Great Migration contrasts wildly with the lumbering, sun-scorched elephants that roam the arid deserts of Namibia. Off its 26,000km coastline you'll find beasts of the deep: South Africa's quaintly unusual Hermanus is one of the most prolific whale watching regions in the world. Whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth, Africa never fails to get under your skin.
Africa with A&K
Africa is often associated with safari - for which Abercrombie & Kent has unrivalled credentials and expertise. Yet the immense expanse of the African continent and its complement of paradise islands offers a great deal more besides.
With offices throughout Africa and our own people on the ground, A&K's knowledge and experience in African holidays and Safaris is unsurpassed.
People return from Kenya full of admiration for the friendly people, colourful tribes and unbeatable game viewing - notably the spectacular annual migration of wildebeest and zebra between the Serengeti to the Mara. The 'Big Five', the high point of many a safari, are resident in higher concentrations here than perhaps anywhere else. Safaris in Tanzania are also amongst the most celebrated in the world. There is simply so much wildlife in the country's many national parks, which include the Serengeti, famed for the annual migration of prolific amounts of game, and the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which cocoons an array of wildlife that roams the crater floor.
South Africa, with its melting pot of cultures, easy-going atmosphere, sophisticated lodges, superb wines and cuisine, wonderful scenery and excellent safari is arguably the most all-encompassing destination in the world. The Western Cape vineyards carpet the rolling landscapes of Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch, and the celebrated Garden Route follows Africa's southern coast along windswept cliffs, sandy bays, sheltered forests and mountains - perfect for nature lovers.
If you subscribe to the belief that the world has become all too familiar, then consider Namibia and prepare to be amazed by its rugged coastline and ever-changing colours; or the island of Madagascar, renowned for its rich flora, fauna and golden sands. Further north, Ethiopia's rich religious history, archaeological treasures, unspoiled mountain scenery and desert valleys make it one of Africa's most fascinating countries.
Zanzibar, with its fascinating Arabic roots, superb diving and stunning white beaches is the perfect complement a safari or a destination in its own right - as is fashionable Mozambique whilst a tropical paradise awaits in the islands of the Indian Ocean.
Whatever you want from your journey to this region of extreme beauty, intense soul and heart-stopping contrasts - whether its cultural insight, pure relaxation, gourmet cuisine, wildlife or adventure - or a combination of everything - our Africa and Indian Ocean specialists will create an itinerary that delivers exactly what you want.
