Craggy mountains, vast glaciers, a wide variety of wildlife and a unique blend of cultures creates an environment that's as breath taking as its raw and natural beauty. Only 1% of Alaska shows any sign of human habitation and at twice the size of Texas it can be difficult to know where to start. With much of the state –the largest in America –relatively undiscovered, it's unsurprising that getting around is half the fun thanks to most of the travel being done by seaplane or by boat. We think that the best way to experience Alaska is by water, to maximise the chances of seeing wildlife but also to view some of Alaska's most stunning natural beauty sites without disturbing the environment. The largest state of the USA is still a relatively new destination for many travellers, and thanks in part to its sheer size it remains an undiscovered gem. Alaska is big: everything is larger than life, from bears the size of a family car, national parks that have seemingly never-ending borders and glaciers of such great scale that they belie global warming. Alaska's wilderness is not only its biggest draw but its finest natural resource;all three species of North American bear flourish here and between June and September they are commonly seen on walking trails and in the river. From June to August humpback whales are known to feed in the waters off Alaska, offering visitors plenty of chances to enjoy the splendour of these magnificent giants of the sea.

Best time to be there
Make the most of long days and the best weather by travelling between June and September during this time the days are long (19 hours of daylight in June) and nature is in full bloom. Sadly the weather in this part of the world isn't predictable. During the summertime days can be pleasantly warm, even hot, but this can be followed in equal measure by rain, fog and then sun again.
