Wrangell-St Elias

Known as 'the mountain kingdom of North America', at 13.2 million acres - six times the size of Yellowstone - the diverse and magnificent Wrangell-St. Elias region covers an area where four great mountain ranges converge, making it the largest United States National Park and Preserve. Remnant volcanos define this wild landscape of remote sweeping valleys, spruce forests, ice fields, rocky coastlines, canyons and alpine tundra. From the second tallest peak in North America, Mount St. Elias (18,008ft) to the ocean gulf, this vast and varied region contains nine of the 16 highest summits in the United States.

Within this impressive landscape of over 150 glaciers, high peaks and wildlife, there are still echoes of the historic copper and gold mining communities who have been living off the rich mineral deposits for centuries. Wildlife abounds with golden eagles, Dall sheep, mountain goats, river otters and orca whales. A recognized World Heritage Site, this extraordinary region is a rugged yet inviting place to experience your own exciting wilderness adventure whether that be bobbing down the tumbling rivers, climbing, hiking, skiing, rafting or kayaking.

Best time to be there

Make the most of long days and the best weather by travelling between June and September during this time the days are long (19 hours of daylight in June) and nature is in full bloom. Sadly the weather in this part of the world isn't predictable. During the summertime days can be pleasantly warm, even hot, but this can be followed in equal measure by rain, fog and then sun again.

Guest Testimonial

A first-class service: finding a suitable cruise to fit my parameters; managing to extend the time during which the offer would remain open so as to give me more time to discuss the trip with my travelling companion; and finally making all the train and hotel bookings to make the whole holiday as trouble free as possible. I cannot speak too highly of the way in which everything been conducted.
