Higher than Niagara Falls at 269 feet and twice as wide, in a horsehoe shape covering nearly 2 miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazu Falls is the result of a volcanic eruption.  Iguazu comes from the Guarani word for "great water", which is understandable considering the waterfalls produce 550 cubic feet of thundering water per second.  As depicted in the film "The Mission", the first explorer to see the falls was the Spaniard, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, in 1541.

Iguazu Falls lies on the Argentinian/Brazilian border in a tropical setting which is so beautiful that it led Eleanor Roosevelt to say "poor Niagara".  Two thirds of the falls are on the Argentinian side of the river where you can also tour Iguazu National Park with its jungle trails, bird watching, wildlife, flora and fauna.  Downstream from the falls where the Parana and Iguazu rivers meet, so do the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

It is also possible to discover the lesser known colonial history of this jungle region by exploring Jesuit ruins south of the falls towards Posadas or north into the borders of Paraguay at Encarnacion. Travel a little further south and combine your trip to the Falls with a journey of discovery into the fascinating flora and fauna of a rich tropical zone in the vast and, until recently, inaccessible Ibera wetlands, home to capybara, caiman, marsh deer, anaconda, howler monkeys and giant storks - a remote untouched haven for nature lovers. Fly-fishing for Dorado, splashing through the shallow waters on horseback or floating through inlets by canoe make for a unique wildlife experience.

The best time to see Iguazu Falls is in the spring and autumn. Summer is intensely hot and humid and in winter the water level is considerably lower.
