Few cities can boast the grand imperial glamour of Vienna, where outrageously extravagant palaces sit alongside coffee houses that resemble artists’ living rooms and music practically emanates from the streets. Visit one of the most musical cities in the world and you’ll experience the works of Mozart, Haydn, Strauss (both junior and senior) Schubert, Brahms and countless others, in venues like the neo-Renaissance Staatsoper, a cultural bastion with an illustrious history. Only second to its music are Vienna’s coffee houses, which feel more like second homes to the residents of this favourably liveable city. The culinary scene is quietly bubbling away and Beisln (bistros) are loved by inhabitants and tourists alike for their eclectic blend of homely cuisine, delicious brews and fine wines.
From Schloss Belvedere to Schloss Schönbrunn and the monumental Hofburg complex, you’ll feel the city’s staggering past in many ways, through the excessive architecture and attractions that only classically stylish Vienna could get away with. One of the best displays of Vienna’s imperial past can be seen at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, where an army of elegantly powerful Lipizzaner stallions perform haute école movements of classical dressage, known as ‘airs above ground’. With a flick of a hoof and swish of an intricately plaited mane the horses and their riders appear to fly across the ground, in an arena that’s so absurdly pompous it could be a ballroom.
The Viennese Waltz, the Spanish Riding School and Johann Strauss; everything associated with Vienna exudes class and quality, and the Ritz-Carlton is no exception. Occupying the site of four former palaces, the 19th century façade gives way to individual, surprisingly capacious rooms and an open roof terrace provides a spectacular platform from which to review the day’s sightseeing conquests. If you do need reminding of the city’s glorious history, a golden, violin-toting Strauss Jnr is waiting for you just over the road in the adjacent Stadtpark.
Hotel Sacher Wien
The Sacher name melts into Vienna’s history, principally due to Franz Sacher’s eponymous torte but more recently, and enduringly, under the stewardship of the Guertler family, in the guise of the Sacher Vienna. Boasting rooms dripping with high quality art, fabrics and furnishings and an enviable location by the State Opera, guests are immersed in the Viennese culture and history. Sampling the decadent Sachertorte is almost a condition of any stay here but why not also indulge in a chocolate based spa treatment in the hotel’s spa, we can personally recommend it!

Spring is particularly pretty throughout Europe as the temperate climate awakens the flora of the region. Wet winters result in green springs and the mountains and plains come alive with blossom and flowers. This region enjoys pleasant warm summers and inland regions can be very hot in July and August, coinciding with the busiest periods. May, June and September are recommended due to the pleasant temperatures, though with fewer crowds. Eastern Europe tends to experience very cold winters, especially in inland areas. This is a pretty time to visit and many Eastern and Central European cities and towns hold traditional Christmas Fairs complete with decorated trees and festive entertainment.
