Rarely do lengthy transfers turn out to be so memorable, for all the right reasons. The Transpanteria road from Cuiaba to the heart of the Brazilian Pantanal may be clouded with red dust on occasion, and somewhat bumpy, but the amount of wildlife to be seen on the way is phenomenal. Birds of prey can be seen at close quarters, Caiman line each passing pond like tadpoles around a pool and Egrets are two a penny. This was just a promise of things to come.
The best half morning of wildlife watching I have had was viewed from a small Southwild boat, along with a guide and an eagle eyed boatman. Being the luckiest person in the world, I watched the rarest of rare, a Puma stalking a Capybara on the river bank. A little further on, I was engrossed with the sight of Giant River Otters munching their way through a fish breakfast. A few more winding bends of the river followed before the appearance of a male Jaguar on the river bank. I watched his every move, as he yawned, sniffed the air, lounged, and ultimately stretched his beautifully spotted body and disappeared into the undergrowth. All before 10 am in the morning.

Once again we have thoroughly enjoyed our holiday with A&K. There was a fascinating mix of location and camp styles and the particular sequence worked very well for us. ![]()
