south africa - MARk renshaw, travel consultant - a&K at harrods
The excitement of my trip to South Africa soon disappeared with an overwhelming fear that the destination would not be able to live up to the amazing reputation that previous travellers have experienced. However I was delighted that this special destination not only lived up to the hype but exceeded my expectations in every way.
I knew that nothing can ever be guaranteed on safari but to my delight within the first 10 minutes I had witnessed a Bull Elephant charge at wild dogs before making a kill and then being chased away by hyenas. The interaction was intense and even our guide of over 20 years watched in amazement as we continued to watch this very unique encounter.
As it turned out, the game was phenomenal and we had spotted the Big Five on our first game drive. The highlight for me was watching a leopard and her two cubs feasting on an impala that the mother had dragged up the tree the night before. To see such beautiful animals so close is one thing but to hear them purr and interact was truly special.
Royal Malewane Game Reserve continued to exceed our expectations on a daily basis. One night we had finished our game drive and were arriving at a wonderful Bedouin style camp in the middle of the bush, lit by hundreds of lanterns and with huge fire pits. This unexpected level of luxury was hard to believe in such wilderness - a lounge area complete with sofas and coffee table, a sumptuous six course meal and even a flushing toilet with Molten Brown toiletries!
We could hear the sounds of the wild as we ate an incredible feast complemented by fine South African wines. The hippos started to get vocal but we knew we were in incredibly safe hands. After coffee we headed back to camp but not before we said goodnight to a lioness and her three cubs on the way.
When I thought my day could not get better, back at the villa I found a roaring fire with flames reflected in the cut glass sherry decanters. This in turn led me to discover a steaming hot bath, freshly prepared for my arrival back in camp.
As I crept into the exceptionally comfortable four poster bed warmed by a hot water bottle, I was ready for a very deep sleep, content this had been one of the best days of my life. I was excited for another day where anything could happen. After all, this is Africa.

First experience with A&K. Intended to ask various travel companies for quotes but Vicky (Agnew) was so good with her suggestions that we did not seek alternative quotations the suggested itinerary was excellent and helped us decide on a balanced and interesting holiday.![]()
