weather

In a country as geographically diverse as Bolivia, local weather patterns vary greatly, however for most people the climate is generally cooler than they expect. In the highlands, the dry season is between May and October. In La Paz and Sucre, temperatures during the day are a pleasant 20º C. Uyuni and Potosi however, can be cold in the middle of the day, and temperatures drop below freezing at night. The Amazon average daytime temperature is 30-32º C with tropical rains on a daily basis (which increase in the wet season), while nights can cool down to 20º C.

A journey through southern Bolivia's Salt Flats and Sud Lipez region will mesmerise you with one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes on the continent. Cross the vast expanse of white salt crust from Uyuni, formed into startling geometric patterns and dotted with several islands on which giant cacti grow. Further into this desert region you traverse sparkling vivid coloured mineral-rich lakes, home to the rare James flamingos, and in whose surfaces volcanic peaks are mirrored. Here you reach the border with northern Chile from which you can conclude your dramatic journey by taking a dip in geothermal springs and relaxing at the desert oasis of San Pedro de Atacama.

Accommodation in this region is simple and your journey is by 4WD vehicle as there are no roads here. However these simple lodges and camps are nonetheless very welcoming and comfortable after a long day's drive and considering their remote location. Stay in a hotel perched on the edge of the Salt Flats, constructed almost entirely of solid rock salt including the bedframes, walls, floor and even the sofas. Other options for lodging include comfortable camping close to the southern edge of the Salt Flat and simple lodges in the red desert close to lakes flocking with flamingos. In 2012 we will also be able to offer some luxurious mobile camping options using caravans to cross the stunning white expanse of the Salt Flat.

Guest Testimonial

Once again we have thoroughly enjoyed our holiday with A&K. There was a fascinating mix of location and camp styles and the particular sequence worked very well for us.
