Now this is an emergency. An A&K emergency. As our guests watched a family of bathing elephants in Botswana’s tannin-hued Okavango Delta they noticed the calm confident guide making a slightly agitated, surreptitious radio call. Were they in danger?

‘No,’ the guide assured them. ‘Everything’s under control.’ He wasn’t bluffing. A few minutes later, a motor launch rounded the river bend and sped towards them, before its driver, with James Bond panache, lobbed a couple of limes to the guide. Crisis averted. Sunset G&T could now be served with ice and a slice.

Guests have also waxed lyrical about the Starbaths at Sanctuary Baines’.  They returned from a dusty game drive to discover the copper tub moved out onto the deck under a million-tog duvet of stars. The champagne’s on ice, bath water frothed to perfection using a fork attached to an electric drill. Bath baristas. Whatever next?

You’ll have to ask our brilliant multi-centred regional team. It has offered luxury travel in Southern Africa for over four decades. That means top-notch guides with specialist knowledge, 24-hour emergency contact and longstanding local relationships that generate unique experiences including a behind-the-scenes Origin of Mankind Tour with Kalahari San Bushmen.

Take a Botswana safari with Abercrombie & Kent and you’ll enjoy the best camps, starting in the Okavango – the planet’s largest inland delta – where you explore by foot, vehicle or dug out canoe. A fifth of the delta falls inside the Moremi Reserve including an area lauded as the country’s predator capital.

Further north the Selinda Reserve sits on a major migration route, while Chobe National Park boasts some of Africa’s densest game concentrations, including 500-strong herds of elephant. Head back south for the extraordinary culture of the Kalahari’s San Bushmen and surreal Makgadikgadi saltpans, where seasonal dustings of water and grass provide a teeming refuge for thirsty wildlife. Sadly, lime slices are not available. .
