Makgadikgadi , Botswana
Sited on the original spot chosen by Jack Bousfield in the 1960's, Jack's Camp is set on the Pans of the Makgadikgadi. A relic of one of the world's largest super-lakes, formed some five to seven million years ago, the lake dried thousands of years ago to leave a vast salt pan.
A traditional East African 1940's style camp consisting of ten sizeable en suite canvas tents are stylishly furnished and set into a palm grove in this harshest of harsh environments. During the wet season an incredible transformation takes place and from an arid desert, clouds of flamingo and other migratory birds descend to decorate the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest emerge, drawn by the fresh lush grass.
It's not uncommon for guides to team up with local bushmen to escort you on morning walks or game drives. Four wheel drive quad bikes will allow you to venture far into the centre of the Makgadikgadi, explore remote archaeological sites and periodically discover never before documented fossil beds of extinct giant zebra and hippo. Jack's Camp is the only place where you are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyena and be able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated but, wild meerkats.
