Makgadikgadi , Botswana
Said to be one of the most romantic camps in Africa and set on a private concession that adjoins the Makgadikgadi National Park, San Camp sits in a reef of palm. Supremely remote, turn 360° and nothing will cross the eye except the bowl of the sky and curve of the earth.
A collection of the Stewart Granger 1940s safari tents, complete with bucket showers, flush toilets, four-poster beds, mosquito net canopies, percale sheets and paraffin lamps. There is no electricity at San Camp. Six white canvas tents combine with this dramatic location, to create an oasis of civilization in what can be the harshest of stark environments.
The guides at San and indeed its satellite camp, Jack's, are often graduate students who combine research studies with guiding. Together with the local Bushmen they will offer you a rare insight into how the natives have survived in this, one of the harshest and dry environments on earth. The Bushmen will impart knowledge of plants, animal behaviour and essential survival skills. Offering a complete desert experience, a safari at San Camp will focus on species that are unique to the area such as aardvark, gemsbuck and springbuck.
