Paraty is one of Brazil’s most stunning regions – no mean feat in country where staggering natural beauty is the norm. Think jutting peninsulas and secluded sandy beaches set against a backdrop of tangled jungle-clad mountains and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what makes this region slap bang between the city behemoths of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro so great. The colonial centre of Paraty is famous for its architecture and lack of traffic, where elegant cobblestone streets are a pleasant place to stroll. The town has a distinctly Portuguese feel with colourful shutters, whitewashed buildings and latticed windows, and during the summer partygoers from Europe and Brazil flock here, creating a lively carnival atmosphere that’s further enhanced by the large population of artists, writers and chefs. Within a few hours’ drive or sail you’ll fine scores of stunning beaches and a national park – Parqu Nacional da Serra da Bocaina – that’s fantastic for budding explorers.
