Golden Rock
Best time to be there
Burma has three clear seasons: from March to May are the very hot summer months, the wet and humid monsoon runs from May to October and the cold dry winter lasts from November to February. The best time of year to visit is late November early December when the rains have gone, the landscape is lush and green and the skies are crystal clear. However any time from late November to March is a good time to travel.

Head off south east from Yangon to the fabulous Golden Rock (Kyaiktiyo) in the Mon State. This site, little visited by tourists and formerly off limits to foreigners, holds particular reverence with the devoutly Buddhist Burmese. Legend has it that the boulder maintains its precarious balance due to a precisely placed Buddha hair in the stupa. Leave Yangon in the morning and have a brief stop and visit at Bago before continuing to the Golden rock with a stop en route for some lunch at the Mountain View Hotel.
Upon arrival you have the option to walk up the very steep and windy road to the top, or you can sit back and relax and be carried up in bamboo sedan chairs. On reaching the top enjoy a mesmeric sunset and immerse yourself in this holy place of pilgrimage and worship. Wander around this village, reminiscent of an "Indian hill station" with hundreds of pilgrims chatting, worshipping, eating, drinking tea and generally enjoying themselves. Overnight in the Mountaintop Hotel.
