Keng Tung

Burma

Best time to be there

Burma has three clear seasons: from March to May are the very hot summer months, the wet and humid monsoon runs from May to October and the cold dry winter lasts from November to February. The best time of year to visit is late November early December when the rains have gone, the landscape is lush and green and the skies are crystal clear. However any time from late November to March is a good time to travel.

For people keen on walks or seeing an area of Southeast Asia and Hill tribes, Keng Tung offers a truly unspoiled glimpse at an area forgotten by the rest of the world.

Keng Tung is a small, sleepy little backwater town tucked away in the far east of the Shan state. The town is in the vicinity of the infamous area known as The Golden Triangle, once famed for its opium production and smuggling. The main focus on a visit to Keng Tung is the charming tribal villages and authentic ethnic minorities that inhabit the surrounding hills. A wander around the town is itself is a great way to take in the old decaying colonial architecture and a stroll around the lake is popular in the morning or early evening. A visit to the market in the morning is a great way to see the hustle and bustle of market life with all the various ethnic minorities who have come into town to sell their various wares and to buy supplies not readily available in their respective villages.

Due to its geographic proximity to both Laos and Thailand the area has more cultural affiliation with its two neighbors than it does with the rest of Myanmar. Although the town sits midway between both the Thanlwin river in Myanmar and the Mekong on the Thai, Laos and Myanmar border, there is a mountain range cutting off Keng Tung with the rest of the country thus enhancing the towns both cultural and historical links with the Thais and Laotians.

Guest Testimonial

First experience with A&K. Intended to ask various travel companies for quotes but Vicky (Agnew) was so good with her suggestions that we did not seek alternative quotations the suggested itinerary was excellent and helped us decide on a balanced and interesting holiday.
