Putao

Burma

Best time to be there

Burma has three clear seasons: from March to May are the very hot summer months, the wet and humid monsoon runs from May to October and the cold dry winter lasts from November to February. The best time of year to visit is late November early December when the rains have gone, the landscape is lush and green and the skies are crystal clear. However any time from late November to March is a good time to travel.

For us Putao, in the far northern reaches of the Kachin sate and close to the border with Tibet, has to be one of the most charming spots in a country overflowing with charm. The sleepy village lanes with their dry stone walls and lovely dark, tar stained wooden houses with children leaning from the upper windows of their raised dwellings waving frenetically and shouting "Hello, bye-bye" in the same breath, cannot but fail too charm even the most frosty of hearts. The valley with its languid rivers, rice paddies and grazing water buffalo stretches away to the rolling hills and the jungle all of which lead ultimately to the craggy Himalayan peaks that lead too northern India and Tibet.

Putao is a place for relaxing, a getaway from the modern world of mobiles and internet, coffee shops and Blackberrys. Spend your days walking through minority villages, mountain biking small jungle paths, enjoy river trips to remote villages or elephant treks in the dense forests. This is for outdoors people who want to breath clean air and enjoy tropical Asia in the shadow of the greatest mountain range on earth.

Unique to Putao is the accommodation. Even in this far flung outpost there is a wonderful lodge. The Malikha Lodge is a truly stunning hotel in the village of Mulashidi on the banks of the Namlang river.
