This vast state in western Canada was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Governor General of Canada in the late 19th Century.
Alberta has a number of climatic regions - boreal forest in the northern half of the province, the 'Rockies' along the southwestern border and prairie land in much of the south. This plays host to a wide range of species - buffalo in the prairies; grizzly and black bears in mountain areas; moose and white-tail deer in the wooded regions. In its many rivers and lakes, you can enjoy swimming, fishing and water sports, whilst soaking up the tranquillity and spectacular views.
Summer is a great time to visit Alberta's cities. Edmonton has earned its name "The Festival City" with its world-class festivals - folk, heritage, music, dance, art and design, food, fashion - many taking place in Churchill Square. And don't miss Canada's biggest rodeo festival, "The Stampede", that takes place every July in Calgary. It is a great place to shop for some unique Alberta heritage crafts.
