Hillsdale House Inn
Why we like it
- Traditional inn near the Bay of Fundy
- Built in 1859, it retains a refreshing mix of Victorian charm and modern-day comforts
- One of the most quaint and characterful properties in Nova Scotia
- Well-loved and cared for by the innkeepers, Val and Paul Stackhouse
- Close to Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, Fort Anne and Port Royal National Historic Sites
Pop by and say hi to Simon the Siamese cat who is very much part of the Hillsdale House family.
The Wickaninnish Inn was a great hotel, we had a great room with a good view of the ocean. The service was perfect and all the staff were very friendly and helpful.
- K Heisterberg, Denmark
Offering 13 beautifully-appointed guest rooms, the Hillsdale House Inn is a traditional inn located within the historic town of Annapolis. Built in 1859 by Susan Forbes Foster, it has been operating as a first-class bed and breakfast for more than 150 years, with a longstanding tradition of providing charming accommodation in the idyllic surroundings of Annapolis Royal, a federally-designated National Historic District. Nestled within a five-hectare estate of lush gardens, shady pergolas and sweeping lawns, the inn applies a home-from-home ethos that keeps guests returning again and again.
Guest rooms are spread across two floors in the main inn, with an attached carriage house providing auxiliary accommodation in the form of three pretty and spacious rooms. Each of the rooms is individually designed, with floral décor, canopy beds and claw-footed Victoria soaker tubs in some of the rooms. We like Room 1, where Prince George of Wales, later King George V, slept while a guest of the inn in June 1884. Guests can relax in the spacious parlours and patios and enjoy the mini DVD library for cosy nights in. Outside, lawn games such as horseshoe pit, croquet and bocce make the most of the fresh Atlantic air.
Best time to be there
The peak season is from June to September. Humpback and Killer whale viewing is best in June and July.
