Chile's Lake District spans two of Chile's most scenic regions, La Araucanía and Los Lagos. From north to south, the Lake District stretches from the Pacific Ocean east to the Andes bordering Argentina and indeed it is very easy to cross into Argentina here to arrive at Bariloche. Famous for its deep blue mountain lakes, snow-capped volcanoes, larch forests, year-round sports and traditional folklore and legends, this area is also very rich in flora and fauna - particularly true for birds and marine animals.
The region is certainly aptly named with twelve large lakes in the Lake District and dozens more dotting the landscape. These glitttering blue mirrored lakes are interspersed by waterfalls, forests of monkey puzzle trees, thermal hot springs and edged by the Andes, including a number of volcanic peaks - Villarica being the highest at 9,395ft (2,847m).
The Lake District will be a major highlight in your holiday or honeymoon to Chile. The stunningly beautiful scenery has been likened to Switzerland, although still remaining uniquely Chilean in feel. Explore the fish market at Angelmo for a seafood lunch, take boat trips across blue lakes where the volcanic peaks above are mirrored in their surface and perhaps take a journey through the Andes over the famous Lakes Crossing to arrive in Argentina.
