  • Sail down the dramatic Yangtze River in five-star style
  • Visit the huge Three Gorges Dam, and learn about its effect on local communities
  • Explore the river's remoter reaches in a hand-poled longboat
  • Live it up in vivacious Shanghai

Day 1 UK / Chengdu
Maximise your time by flying overnight from the UK to Chengdu.

Day 2 Chengdu
Laidback, deeply traditional and thrustingly 21st century, Chengdu –the Sichuan capital –is an excellent introduction to China. The Ritz-Carlton Chengdu is well-placed for explor-ing, and for experiencing the city's gongfu tea culture. The Panda Breeding and Research Centre, where you can get up close to the adorable endangered animals (including the nursery full of cubs), is a must.

Day 3 Chengdu / Chongqing
Head west, via the Dazu Caves –hillsides carved with Bud-dhist sculptures dating from the ninth to the 13th century –to reach Chongqing, on the mighty Yangtze River. The MS Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer will be moored here: she's the smallest, most exclusive cruise boat plying the Three Gorg-es. Settle into your cabin, admire the views from your private balcony, then tuck into a delicious dinner on board.

Day 4 Yangzi River Cruise
Watch riverbank life unspooling from the sun deck, an ever-changing view of farming terraces, rearing cliffs and tiny villages. Step ashore at Wanzhou, a remote mountain city that spreads over both riverbanks. It offers real insight into rural China, plus a chance to learn about the impact the Three Gorges Dam Project has had on local communities.

Day 5 Yangzi River Cruise
Hold your breath as the ship squeezes between the sheer cliffs of Qutang Gorge, the narrowest stretch on the journey, and deep, peak-guarded Wu Gorge. At Badong, switch to a local longboat, poled by a Tujia boatman;this is the most intimate and effective way to delve further into the time-untouched landscapes, where endangered flowers bloom and the elusive golden hair monkey might be seen. Long, majestic Xiling Gorge completes the famed trio of ravines –it's here that the ship must pass the locks of the Three Gorges Dam, a true highlight.

Day 6 Yichang / Shanghai
The Three Gorges Dam, which raised the level of the Yangzi by up to 180 metres, is somewhat controversial but an undisputed engineering marvel. Disembark at Yichang to visit the project and appreciate its enormous scale. Then it's to time to fly to another modern Chinese marvel: glittering Shanghai.
Hyatt on the Bund Shanghai | Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 Shanghai
You won't find a better base in the 'Paris of the Orient' than the Hyatt on the Bund –this classy hotel overlooks the Huang Pu River, at the end of the city's iconic waterfront. Wake early enough and you'll see pyjama-clad locals gather here for dawn t'ai chi. Spend a day exploring the sights, from ancient temples to futuristic skyscrapers.
