Costa Rica Holidays
Sitting at the heart of Central America, Costa Rica stretches from the calm waters of the Caribbean to the exhilarating waves of the Pacific. Costa Rica has one of the most enlightened conservation policies in the area, taking great care to look after its natural treasures, whether it is the volcanoes and rainforests or sea turtles and sloths. The flora and fauna in the central highlands make it a naturalist's delight with many endemic flowers and insects. Among the privileges the natural world offers here is the sight of the green turtle nesting at Tortuguero National Park, the turquoise browed motmot, colourful long-tailed quetzal hiding amid the forests, or the exquisite inlets and islands of the Osa Peninsula. Dramatic Arenal Volcano, which has only recently stopped being active, towers over the verdant forest, occasionally emitting plumes of smoke. The Central Highlands region of Costa Rica affords a verdant landscape dotted with coffee plantations and surrounded by jagged mountain peaks, and makes a great relaxing base to start your tour of Costa Rica. You can also explore botanical gardens and archaeological museums in the centre of Costa Rica's capital, San José. North of the Central Highlands is the dramatic scenery of La Fortuna region around the foot of Arenal Volcano. The volcano itself is imposing, and although it's now dormant, plumes of smoke can still be seen. There are also many forest trails nearby to explore the flora and fauna and geothermal springs where you can relax in the mineral rich warm waters.
Costa Rica with A&K
Timing is everything. And local knowledge. A returning guest recently told us how our guide gave her precise advice on when to head to her eco lodge deck to witness whales breaching off Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. Almost to the second, several humpbacks entered stage left for an afternoon matinee of joyous breaching and tail slapping.
Brilliant, passionate and highly qualified guides are, of course, de rigeur for A&K. Along with the best 4WD vehicles - crucial for accessing the superbly protected wilderness - and long established local contacts, we offer seamless travel through a country washed by both Pacific and Caribbean waters, and through its Central American neighbours.
The cream of the crop is the Osa Peninsula's rainforest, surrounded by the beaches and inlets of the Corcavado National Park. Its jungle-swaddled lodges offer superb hiking with the chance of spotting tapir and ocelo; birding - hummingbirds, toucans and macaws are just the start - and dolphin and whale spotting trips in the Golfo Dulce.
Its Pacific coast also boasts the stunning Nicoya Peninsula with its mountain backdrop, and the small but perfectly formed Manuel Antonio National Park, threaded with forest trails. Expect to find everything from squirrel monkeys to two-toed sloths, super beaches and quiet riot of activities from rafting to canopy tours and sports fishing.
For those who prefer sunrise to sunset, the Caribbean coast's Tortuguero National Park offers a rare, carefully monitored, opportunity to watch green and leatherback turtles coming ashore at night to nest on the honey coloured sand. Combine it with day trips through the natural web of waterways that riddle the coastal forest and mangroves, watching out for iguanas and alligators.
And while it might be slim, you'll discover Costa Rica has a fascinating interior. The Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, offering mellow mountains mist, verdant vegetation and well-marked trails, is a serene contrast to the famous Arenal Volcano, violently spewing rocks, lava and sparks. Yet another mesmerising act in Costa Rica's potent natural drama.
