St Lucia

RELAXATION: Tropical white sand beach

St. Lucia, known as the ‘Helen’ of the Caribbean, is famous for its dramatic physical beauty. Towering green mountains covered in lush tropical forest form a backdrop for its beautiful sandy beaches.

With an interesting mixture of French and English heritage, St. Lucia claims to have taken the best of both cultures – the Creole cuisine and delicious St. Lucian bread have a decidedly French flavour, while St. Lucians are equally passionate about a good game of cricket! The majority of locals speak a French-based patois, live in villages with French names and go to Catholic churches.

We recommend visiting the open air markets with their irresistible selection of tropical fruit, vegetables, fish and crafts. Other attractions you will not want to miss include a trip to the world’s only ‘drive-in’ volcano, La Soufrière. A day trip to Soufrière, the oldest town on the island, can be combined with a visit to the deep green twin peaks of The Pitons. The National Rainforest Reserve, comprising 19,000 acres, is a delight for bird watchers, hikers and nature lovers alike. For those who love to spend their holidays as close to the water as possible, there are wonderful diving, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing and sailing opportunities.

British Airways flies twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays (Sunday in May) from London Gatwick to Hewanorra International Airport, with a touchdown in Antigua. This service reduces to a weekly flight in the summer. Virgin Atlantic flies direct on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from London Gatwick and from Manchester (high season only) on Thursdays
