ESCAPISM: terracotta warriors

China offers today's traveller a journey of discovery; visit the magnificent temples, pagodas and monuments such as the Great Wall.

China is home to a vast expanse of terrain ranging from snow-capped mountains and windswept plateaux to immense misty lakes and the mighty Yangzi River, famous for its steep and dramatic gorges.

Beijing is a dynamic city where the old and new intermingle and Shanghai contains the most striking blend of oriental and western cultures. Xian is home to the army of more than 7000 Terracotta Warriors whilst Guilin is hailed by many as the most beautiful place in China and is one of the must see destinations for most foreign tourists, especially the limestone caves. Kunming is skirted by mountains to the north, east, and west and is the capital of Yunnan Province, known as the “city of eternal spring.” High rise Hong Kong offers an exotic melting pot of colourful junks and sleek skyscrapers. Hong Kong also presents the perfect place for a stopover, with fabulous hotels and restaurants that are the envy of Asia.

Yunnan Province is home to the extraordinary Naxi people. Their village resembles a scene from the Middle Ages; farm carts pulled by ox, heating by open fires and of course there are no fridges. Food is preserved by being dried in the sun. The villagers are incredibly friendly and welcoming.
