Fairmont Nile City

Day 2 Cairo
Spend the day discovering the treasures of Cairo, starting at the Egyptian Antiquities Museum which is crammed with the exquisite treasures found in Tutankhamun’s tomb - in contrast to the rather macabre collection mummies of ancient pharaohs! After lunch, visit the imposing hilltop Citadel, the splendid 19th century Mosque of Mohammed Ali and the Sultan Hassan Mosque, before enjoying a snapshot of a more contemporary Cairo life as you explore the winding alleys of the Khan el Khalili Bazaar. In the evening, there is the option to see an atmospheric Son et Lumiere performance at the pyramids.

Day 3 Cairo
Today is Pyramid Day, beginning south of Cairo at the ruins of Memphis and the Stepped Pyramid of Zoser I at Sakkara, thought to be the oldest stone structure in the world. The day’s real highlight however is likely to be the Great Pyramids at Giza, the only remaining of the Seven Wonders of the World, with the mighty Sphinx standing guard nearby. Spend some time at the Solar Boat Museum which houses two funerary barges discovered in 1954, a fascinating insight to ancient beliefs about the afterlife.

Day 4 Cairo / Aswan
An early flight takes you to Luxor where you’ll board the luxurious Sun Boat IV, your floating home for the next four nights. After lunch on board, it is time to explore Luxor’s West Bank, notably The Valley of the Kings - where over 60 tombs have been discovered including the burial chamber of Tutankhamun. Nearby is The Valley of the Queens which houses around 80 tombs from queens of the 18th, 19th and 20th Dynasties. You’ll also visit the impressive cliffside Temple of Hatshepsut, built by Pharaonic Egypt's only female ruler, rising out of the desert plain in a series of terraces. On the way back the boat, you’ll stop to see the Colossi of Memnon before re-embarking ahead of the captain's cocktail party.

Day 5 Aswan / Kom Ombo / Edfu
After breakfast, jump on board a motorboat headed for the majestic Philae Temple on the Island of Agilika. Back on board Sun Boat IV, if you are a keen cook, chef will share the secrets of his Egyptian cuisine during a cooking lesson. Sun Boat IV gently sets sail during lunch, to dock at Kom Ombo, whose temple is dedicated to the crocodile-god Sobek, standing on a bend in the Nile where in ancient times sacred crocodiles basked in the sun on the riverbank. Enjoy afternoon tea on board as the boat makes its way to Edfu where you’ll disembark to explore the largest and most completely preserved Pharaonic - albeit Greek-built - temple in Egypt, the extraordinary Temple of Horus. There will be time to relax on board during the late afternoon before a lively Egyptian-themed dinner.

Day 6 Luxor
While you enjoy a sumptuous breakfast, Sun Boat IV heads towards Luxor, where you’ll disembark on the East Bank. Your Egyptologist will guide you around the strikingly graceful Temple of Luxor, dedicated to the god Amun and the Temple of Karnak, built over more than a thousand years by generations of Pharaohs where you’ll see the great Hypostyle Hall, an astonishing feat of ancient engineering. After lunch on board, you’ll cross to the West Bank of Luxor to explore the Valley of the Kings, a vast City of the Dead where magnificent tombs were carved into the desert rocks, decorated richly, and filled with treasures for the afterlife by generations of Pharaohs, and the site of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Then it is time to head to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (Ancient Egypt's only female Pharaoh), a sophisticated complex which rises out of the desert plain in a series of terraces, merging into the sheer limestone cliffs that surround it. The last stop of the day, on the way back to the river Nile, is to take in the Colossi of Memnon, known in Ancient Greek times for their haunting voices at dawn. A farewell gala dinner awaits your final evening on board, a formal affair with white-gloved waiters serving gourmet cuisine.
