The endless variety of Europe means it's hard to think of a single thing that links all 50 countries together. The staggering architecture? It's certainly beautiful, from Moorish to Baroque to Renaissance… The food? Fantastically diverse, with piquant herbs and spices, the freshest produce and innovative, scene-stealing restaurants in every city. What about the scenery? The landscapes vary from mountains (the Alps) to moonscapes (Cappadocia), and in some instances you can go from skiing to the beach in a single afternoon. As a continent, Europe's many regions are often characterised by its national staples;tapas from Spain, pizza from Italy, bratwurst from Germany or souvlaki from Greece. But were you aware that you can also find some of the world's greatest sushi in Russia, the finest Indian food in England and the Netherlands, or authentic Middle Eastern falafel in Sweden? Europe doesn't discriminate when it comes to a tasty morsel.
But its single greatest draw is surely its scenic sights;an almost unimaginable wealth of attractions, from the birthplace of democracy in anarchic Athens to the romantic domes and spires of Florence's unmistakable skyline. Canals are no more beautiful than under the dreamy light that seeps through Venice's watery streets, beaches no more scenic than in the Greek Islands or Croatia, while multi-layered, multi-cultural influences have shaped ancient cities like Rome, Barcelona and Paris into pulsating, brilliant hotbeds of innovation and activity. So where to begin? Like all great adventures it's best to start slow, but once you've dipped beneath Europe's frankly stunning surface, you'll be hooked for life.
