For many children, The Lion King is their first introduction to Africa, the savannah and the circle of life. Where better to bring the bush alive than in Kenya, home to some of Africa's most famous wildlife reserves, and an absurdly large volume of wildlife.

Start your Kenyan adventure...
on the outskirts of Nairobi at Giraffe Manor where you'll be expected to share your brekkie with the leggy locals. With a particular penchant for breakfast, the resident giraffes join guests every morning for not only the most important meal of the day, but also the most exciting!

There's more to this pad than beautiful accommodation and gatecrashed breakfasts though - the Giraffe Centre provides an insight into the ongoing conservation projects aimed at protecting these magnificent creatures. Nearby, at David Sheldrick's Wildlife Trust you'll see young elephants at play and being bottle-fed by their dedicated keepers, who'll talk you through the processes involved in returning these beautiful, gentle creatures to the wild.

And talking of wild... Arguably the jewel in Kenya's crown, no trip would be complete without a visit to the Masai Mara, one of Africa's greatest game reserves. Glamping takes on a whole new level at Sanctuary Olonana. The ensuite tents all have wooden floors, large beds, rather decadent furnishings and your own veranda overlooking a hippo infested river (it gets noisy … a little smelly at times too!).There is masses of game (elephant, zebra, lion) in the area whenever you visit and you'll be at the heart of the action during the annual wildebeest migration. During your stay in the bush you'll learn how to identify animals from their tracks, and how to make a fire the Maasai way. You might want to bring some binoculars, although you'll be blown away by just how close you get to the Big Five. Whilst early morning game drives mean getting up earlier than on a school day, you'll be more than rewarded for your endeavours – not least by some homemade hot chocolate and biscuits in the bush, and some down time in the pool after lunch. Visit a local Maasai community and the school that the lodge supports to see how very different life in Africa is.

A stay in Kicheche Laikipia in the Ol Pejeta conservancy offers up further opportunities for incredible experiences. How about a walking safari (don't worry, you're well looked after) or head out with your guide to look for lions: some of the lions have collars for research purposes, and you can help track them using aerials. Ol Pejeta is East Africa's largest Black Rhino Sanctuary and the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. Wildlife viewing and interaction really doesn't get any better.

Did you know...

  • Hakuna Matata, a phrase made famous in The Lion King movie, is Swahili for “no worries”
  • You can hear a lion roar from five miles away
  • Whilst hippos may look solid and slow, they are very quick runners and could easily outrun a human being
  • An elephant trunk has over 150,000 muscles, but no bones
  • A leopard’s tail is as long as its body – this helps it to balance and enables it to turn quickly
  • Giraffes’ tongues are almost two feet long!

The Boring Bit

  • Airline routes - London Heathrow direct to Nairobi
  • Flying time - 8+ hours (GMT +2 hours = no jet lag!)
  • Visas are required - these can be organised pre travel or on arrival
  • Health considerations - Malaria tablets required. Yellow fever vaccination required if travelling from an endemic area. Please consult your GP
