The Ancient Maya...had the right idea when they chose to build their most magnificent cities on Mexico's Yucatan, a peninsula of cave-dotted jungle lapped by the Caribbean sea. It's a place of natural splendour and high adventure, dotted with the remains of that once-dominant civilisation as well as modern Mayan culture. That means a trip here can combine fascinating history with white-knuckle thrills and some big surprises from Mother Nature.

The Mayan sites will intrigue even the most culture-averse kids (yes, really!). The temples are so well preserved, and dramatically sited. Take the fortress city of Tulum, a complex of walls, shrines and a castle pyramid perched on a clifftop, right by the sea;pack your cossie, because once you've explored the site's nooks and crannies, you can jump straight in for a swim.

That's not to say that all Mayan culture is old. There are still thriving Mayan communities, where you can learn first-hand about their way of life over a traditional meal of earth-cooked chicken. They might even let you help make the tortillas!

The sea –a blissful, balmy blue –will still beckon though. So hop aboard a private catamaran to view the Mayan Riviera from offshore and to sample some super snorkelling –you won't have to search too hard for the masses of colourful reef fish, rays and turtles. If you come during the summer school holidays you might get an extra treat: this is when whale sharks migrate past the coast. Special boat trips will take the whole family out to swim with these gentle giants.

There's plenty of big wows back on land too. The Yucatan is like a geological Swiss cheese, riddled with cenotes (sinkholes), caves and underground rivers. Head to Punta Venado Caribbean Ecopark, where finding them –by quadbike, on horseback or on foot –will make you feel like a real explorer. Venture to the Rio Secreto, an extensive network of subterranean rivers, where expert guides will lead you through an otherworldly realm of flooded caverns and sculptural stalactites and stalagmites. Above ground, and for an alternative perspective on Mexico's spectacular jungle, take to the zipline for a bird's-eye view of the nature and foliage below.

Finding a good base for your mini adventurers is key. The seaside Rosewood Mayakoba offers a scatter of casitas that are connected by a network of crystal-clear waterways. Their Rose Buds kids' club offers dynamic and cultural activities to spark the creativity of even the youngest explorers. What an adventure!
