As Audrey Hepburn once said, "Paris is always a good idea," and we wholeheartedly agree: Paris is beautiful at any time of the year. The city takes on a new personality for each season, but in the summer months the sun shines bright, the pavements seem to sparkle and the entire city is hit with shafts of ethereal light which ricochet from sash window to white-fronted stucco. Far smaller than many European cities, it's easily walkable, with the Metro offering welcome respite from your pavement pounding. Whether you're here for the sights or are returning for the tenth time, Paris is a love affair you can surrender yourself to completely.
The Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame are imposing from all angles: instead, we recommend a cycle tour of the Seine on a Velib bike, or a tour of the city's underground sewers - no, really. Here you'll discover the fascinating history of unknown Paris, plus enjoy the spooky atmosphere of Jean Valjean's famous hiding place in Les Miserables. On a warm day, enjoy the best of Paris with a cafe au lait and a freshly baked slice of caramelised Flan Parisien, enjoyed with a book in the Luxembourg Gardens. At night, try traditional bistro fare at Paul-Bert, a former butchers with a zinc topped bar and colourful tiled floor. Finish your evening with a glass of vin rouge at La Cave des Abbesses, where you can buy a bottle to take home.
Made famous as the hotel where Marlene Dietrich occupied a suite for three years in the 1930s, the Hotel Lancaster was transformed from townhouse to luxury hotel in 1925. It's no wonder: its location is second to none, mere steps from the Champs-Elysees and the Triangle d'Or, it boasts one of the most exclusive addresses in Paris, hence the litany of stars of the small and silver screen (not to mention royalty, politicians and artists) who have graced its gracious doors. Though the 56 rooms are exquisite you'll be hard pressed to draw yourself away from the three salons, each stuffed to the gills with antiques, Baccarat crystal and paintings.
The staff at Le Meurice have quite likely seen it all, given the eccentric characters that have stayed here (Salvador Dali was once a regular). The humbug-striped cushions and opulent satin drapes are situated in a gorgeous building that's in one of the best spots in Paris, especially for museum lovers: located on the rue de Rivoli, it's sited between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde, and views look out over the Tuileries Gardens, the Musee d'Orsay and the Eiffel Tower, while the wraparound terrace that envelops the Belle Etoile Suite offers 360-degree views of the city.
