With fascinating history, romantic landscapes, stunning architecture and buzzing big cities –there's much more to Germany than bratwurst and beer. From Munich's eclectic architecture, winter markets and fine beer to lively Berlin's iconic buildings and arty energy: in Germany you'll experience storybook landscapes, fascinating history and high culture. You'll see dramatic backdrops from a Rhine cruise past mountains, vineyards and enigmatic castles, to Germany's vertiginous Alps crowned by 2962m Mount Zugspitzen –handily its peak sports a gourmet restaurant and igloo hotel –and Franconia's limestone cliffs. Then there's Cologne Cathedral, Nuremberg's Old Town and the Baltic Coast's vast sandy beaches and aristocratic resorts –Germany is a roller coaster of feasts, romance and beauty that's just waiting to be explored. The vibrant capital, Berlin, continues to revel in the rejuvenation it has enjoyed since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie stand as a visual reminder of the city's turbulent past. One of Europe's greatest –and greenest –cities, Berlin is a kaleidoscopic mix of grit and glamour with a hugely diverse blend of cultures. Its remarkable history is as famous as its notoriously wild nightlife, while it retains a longstanding hipster vibe as photographers and artists gather in search of inspiration. Munich is a welcome contrast: known by locals as the 'village of a million people', the best way to get to know Munich and its historic centre is on foot. Visit Nymphenburg Palace, once the summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria in open countryside, one of the most well-known features in the complex is the extravagant Rococo-style Amalienborg Pavilion, nestled in the beautiful parkland.
Germany with A&K
When it comes to Germany, you can't give us enough positive feedback. Your accounts of A&K's guardian angels - our network of super helpful locals smoothing out your travels - are nothing short of miraculous. There's the angel who tracked down a specialist Berlin auction house for two antique-collecting guests. As they were heading home before the auction, he noted their desired items and price limits, bid successfully on their behalf and then packed the items and sent them to California.
And then there's the guest who realised at Munich airport check-in that he'd forgotten to write to his son in Sydney. He had, however, spotted the perfect postcard at a souvenir shop. The guardian angel tracked it down, wrote a suitable message and posted it to Australia.
And we really ought to mention the private gourmet cooking lesson, arranged with the Kempinski Grill chef after our party had enjoyed a superb meal. The stories are legion, reflecting the strength of our multi-centre European team that, over a quarter of a century, has established excellent contacts, a web of brilliantly informative guides and, of course, our guardian angels.
Take an Abercrombie & Kent Germany holiday in 2016 and we'll show you fascinating history, high culture and romantic landscape: Munich's eclectic architecture, winter markets and fine beer; surprisingly beautiful Hamburg's vast harbour and excellent museums; and lively Berlin's iconic buildings and arty energy.
You'll see divine scenery from a Rhine cruise past mountains, vineyards and enigmatic castles, to Germany's vertiginous Alps crowned by 2962m Mt Zugspitzen - handily its peak sports a gourmet restaurant and igloo hotel - and Franconia's limestone cliffs. There's Cologne Cathedral, Nuremberg's Old Town and the Baltic Coast's vast sandy beaches and aristocratic resorts.
Travel to Germany with A&K and it's all waiting for you. We can't resist one final story. During a long European break, our guest and his sons needed to do a sizeable laundry. Not wanting them to waste holiday time, our man in Berlin took their clothes home to wash, before delivering them to their hotel in pristine condition. Now that really is angelic.
Germany is a year-round destination. While Munich might be considerably further south than Berlin, the two cities have broadly comparable summers due to altitude of Munich. May through to September are the most popular months and best for getting outdoors. Spring and Autumn hold real attraction as they are quieter and the weather is still pleasant. Winter is Christmas market time in the main cities.

Each guide was very helpful and knowledgeable too. The hotels you selected were all beautiful with excellent service – we were particularly impressed with the wonderful Lodge in PingAn and the modern and welcoming Temple House in Chengdu. The train between Shanghai and Beijing was also a great journey – thank you for thinking to organise the Red Cap porter service as well!
