Day 2 Acropolis
Your Athenian adventure begins today with a half day tour introducing you to the complex of monuments that most symbolise Athens - the Acropolis. The highlight of the tour is undoubtedly the Parthenon - one of the most important ancient monuments in the Western world, it was conceived in 447BC and dedicated to the Goddess Athena. At the foot of the hill is the Acropolis Museum, which exhibits around 4,000 articles in natural light with special climate controlled measures protecting them from sunlight. The most impressive part of the museum is the top floor, where visitors are able to view the famous frieze and then look out to view the Parthenon itself. Afterwards, you'll have some time to stroll through the ancient district of Plaka, one of the most picturesque and interesting parts of the city.

Day 3 Benaki Museum
After a leisurely breakfast your private guide will take you to the Benaki Museum, a fascinating display of eclectic Greek and Oriental art housed in the Benaki family house. You'll drive past the Panathenaic Stadium, the only stadium in the world built entirely of white marble. On your way back to the centre of Athens, you may be able to see the Changing of the Guard in Constitution Square. This afternoon you'll have some free time to enjoy the city by yourself and perhaps take up your guide's tips on where to shop, eat and people watch.

Day 4 Varvakios Agora
Navigate your way through the bustling alleys of Varvakios Agora, the picturesque fish, meat and vegetable market that is the true 'belly of Athens'. After working up an appetite, you may wish to finish your tour with a stop at a local taverna to savour authentic Greek souvlaki.

Best time to be there

The mainland and islands are very hot and dry in July and especially August, the preferred travel month for French, Italian and Spanish holiday makers, making conditions busy, hotel availability limited and the beaches crowded. May, June and September are infinitely more comfortable and generally less expensive.
Rhodes, with its refreshing westerly winds and moderate summer heat, makes it the ideal place to travel for a summer holiday or a short break in the spring or Autumn.
