The Spanish, French and British fought for many years to control the island and the Anglo-French pedigree is captured in the attractive hillside capital of St. George's, with its picturesque houses, quaint streets and colourful harbour - an essential destination for any Grenada holiday. Grenada is also home to the world's first underwater sculpture gallery. Created by Jason de Caires Taylor, 65 sculptures are displayed on the sea bed and can be seen by divers, snorkellers or from glass-bottom boats. Fishing also plays an important part to the islanders and on the 29th June each year, Fisherman's Birthday is celebrated in Grenada. The heart of the celebrations are held in Gouyave where the fishing boats and nets are blessed in a church service. A series of boat races follow and the day ends in true Caribbean style with a street party. Visit Gouyave on any Friday of the year for a taste of Fish Friday, a celebration every week. Venture into the many spice plantations and Grenada's exquisite chocolate is a must.
