Lake Atitlan
Best time to be there
Known as the country of eternal spring, Guatemala is good to visit all year round but the dry season is November to May. The climate also varies according to altitude. The low-lying jungle areas such as El Peten are generally hot and sticky, in contrast to the highlands which are pleasantly warm during the day but can be very cool at night.

Lake Atitlan is 1,500m above sea-level, about 10km across and 18km long and is one of the most beautiful and colourful lakes in the world. It changes colour constantly from aqua marine to emerald to azure. It is surrounded by striking purple volcanic mountains and dark green, pine forested hills. A dozen or so villages dot its shoreline and highlight the ever-present maya culture, costumes, religions and way of life that is so fascinating today. Relax with the beauty or enjoy easy boat trips to the nearby local villages.
