Why we like it

  • You can take a kayak from the hotel to explore Lake Peten Itza.
  • Easy access to the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal.
  • Experience a traditional temascal, a local-style sauna.
  • Sip a cocktail on the terrace while the sun sets over Lake Peten Itza and the jungle sounds surround you.

A&K Top Tip

Instead of heading to the ruins and then straight on again, spend an extra day and explore the jungle shores the Lake Peten Itza by kayak or private boat.

- GF, Bedfordshire

Located on the lake shores in the jungle region of El Remate, 45 minutes’ drive from the ruins of Tikal, this hotel has privileged views out over the lake from the thatched Royal Club rooms, whereas the Deluxe rooms have private balconies in the manicured gardens.

Painted brightly, the simple rooms are an excellent place to base yourself when exploring the local area. The hotel operates several traditional Mayan-style saunas, called temascales, where you can experience this unique insight into the local culture.

The Ceibal and Nakun restaurants serve international food as well as local specialities while cocktails are served at Cahuí Bar every evening.

Best time to be there

Known as the country of eternal spring, Guatemala is good to visit all year round but the dry season is November to May. The climate also varies according to altitude. The low-lying jungle areas such as El Peten are generally hot and sticky, in contrast to the highlands which are pleasantly warm during the day but can be very cool at night.
