Iceland Adventure Escape

Iceland, 3 Nights

Day 1 - London Heathrow - Iceland
Depart London Heathrow on Icelandair for the three hour flight to Iceland. Upon arrival you will be met by an A&K representative and taken on an orientation tour of Reykjavik and its surrounding areas. During your tour you will get to see Parliament, the National Museum and Hofdi House, made famous in 1986 for the summit between Gorbachev and Reagan.

You will then be transferred to Hotel 101. This modern contemporary hotel is centrally situated a few minutes from the main shopping area. After dinner at the Fish Market (own expense), if weather conditions permit, you will be taken to a site away from the city lights to try and capture the natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights.

Day 2 - The Golden Circle
After breakfast, check out from the 101 Hotel. You will be driven into the countryside to Thingvellir, the site of the original Althing, considered the oldest democratic parliament in the world established in 930AD. This area is noted for its spectacular lava formations and being the only place in the world where you can see the tectonic plates drift apart. Next it is onto the town of Geyser, which gave its name to all other erupting hot springs. You will see one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up to 90 feet into the air. From here you will go to one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe, Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall). Here you will see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down in a double-fall into a deep gorge from the glacier Langjokull.

The tour ends at the Cave Mountain Resort in the mountains beneath the glacier Langjokull the second biggest in Europe. The views are superb, with glaciers, rivers, mountains and forests spread out for your enjoyment. Imagine being able to unwind and relax far removed from your every day life. After dinner at the Lava Cave Restaurant, if conditions permit, you may be fortunate to witness the magical Northern Lights.

Day 3 - Day at leisure
After breakfast at the Lodge, you have a choice of activities:

Option 1 - The Highlands by Helicopter
Take an exhilarating helicopter ride into the highlands of Iceland. Flying over the massive glacier Langjokull and over the narrow canyon of the glacier river Hvita, you will get to see Gullfoss waterfall from the air. You will circle around the volcano Hekla. It is still very active, erupting most recently in 1970, 1980, 1981 and in 1991. The last eruption started on 26th February in 2000 and lasted for 12 days; the lava from this eruption covers approximately 18 km2.

Next you will visit Landmannalaugar. Landmannalaugar is a natural pearl, hidden in the highlands of Iceland. There are hot and cold springs all around, amazing lava fields and outstanding scenery. One of the best characteristics of this area, are the Rhyolith Mountains, with their multi-coloured shapes and sizes. You will land by one of the natural hot springs where a massage awaits you after a walk with your mountain guide around the area. Lunch is offered by a five star chef next to one of the springs in the middle of the lava field. After a memorable day in the Highlands you will fly back home to the cave Lodge for dinner.

Option 2 - Super-jeep safari and Snow Mobiling
The day starts by driving in Super-jeeps to Thorsmork which is one of the brightest pearls in the string of beautiful areas of the country, surrounded by rugged and beautiful mountains, glaciers and glacial rivers, decorated with small birch woods and silver lined with babbling brooks.

Thorsmork, is difficult to reach, except by mountain vehicles which is why you will travel in the company of experienced guides who carefully navigate the glacial rivers are unpredictable and the fords change constantly. After a walk into the narrow gorge of Stakkholtsgja, a helicopter awaits and flies you to the top of the Myrdalsjokull Glacier where a buffet lunch will be served. After lunch it's time for some activity. Snow mobiling is full action on either glaciers or heaths all depending on weather conditions. Be prepared for extreme adrenaline adventure. In the evening, you have the choice of dining at the lodge or at The Mongolian tent located 15 minutes from the lodge, set in a beautiful forest.

Crampons are provided as you walk onto the ice field where a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses awaits discovery. Ice climbing and hiking is getting more and more popular as a sport in Iceland, as conditions are quite good most of the year. Next it's time to meet your husky dogs who will take you on an exhilarating journey on the icefield. Return to Hotel 101 in Reykjavik. Dinner at the Dill restaurant (own expense).
