  • Join the monks for a magical early morning prayer ceremony at Thiksey Monastery
  • Stay in ornate mobile tents: this is glamping on another level with en suite bathrooms and personal butlers
  • Watch the colourful sunset from Shanti Stupa overlooking the Old City of Leh

Day 1: Leh to Chamba Camp, Thiksey
A member of the A&K team will meet you at the airport and drive you to Chamba Camp in Thiksey. You’ll enjoy a traditional Ladakh welcome on arrival as guests of the Thiksey Monastery as you acclimatise to the altitude. An Excursion Specialist will be available to help you plan your activities and customise your stay to suit your interests.

Day 2: Leh
We recommend you spend your first full day exploring the camp; early risers will benefit from an optional bird watching sojourn with the camp naturalist, spotting and identifying a variety of birds of the Trans-Himalayan region. In the afternoon, head to Leh to explore the city, including landmarks such as the magnificent Leh Palace. Built by King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th century, the palace has nine storeys, some of which are in ruins. The LAMO (Ladakh Art & Media Organistation) Centre is just a short walk away, and the walk there passes some enchanting old houses, and following your tour you’ll watch a short presentation by a Ladakhi scholar on the architectural heritage of the old city. Your day will conclude with a visit to the Shanti Stupa, perched above the city with spectacular views. It’s the ideal spot to enjoy a hot cup of traditional Ladakhi butter tea while watching the sunset.
Chamba Camp | Breaskfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3: Thiksey monastery and the Hemis Monastery
An early morning start precedes a visit to the Thiksey monastery, a mere kilometre from the camp, which houses a two-storey statue of the Maitreya Buddha and affords spectacular views. The early start is worth it for the chance to participate in the morning prayer ceremony, followed by a tour of the monastery. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you please: we’d recommend a cycling trip into Thiksey village, or a drive to a neighbouring village for a séance with the Oracle (should he be willing to give an audience). This afternoon, explore the oldest monastic institution in Ladakh, the Hemis Monastery. Built in a secluded valley, it has many interesting facets and is adorned with beautiful murals.
Chamba Camp | Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: Ladakh and Alchi
One of the benefits of mobile camping is the option to tailor your experience to suit you. Today you’ll have the choice of uncovering the monastic treasures of Ladakh on a drive through the picturesque landscapes along the River Indus, visiting fabled monasteries, seeing the beautiful Tibetan and Gandhara style murals and frescoes and the ruins of the 15th century Basgo fort, which bears the evidence of the invasions of the Mongols.

You can combine your monastic tour with an option rafting excursion, driving through the pastoral countryside to the ‘put-in’ point; a gentle rafting trip follows, floating down the Indus River past traditional Ladakhi villages and enjoy the contrasting greenery and stark, barren landscape of the other. An enchanting cultural dance performance caps off your day.
Chamba Camp | Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5: Stok Palace
Crossing the River Indus you’ll visit the Stok Palace, a beautiful medieval fortress that serves as the residence of the Queen Mother and Prince of Ladakh. A section of this Palace has been converted into a museum which houses some of the most interesting and priceless collections of the Royal family. The nearby rustic Stok Village offers a glimpse into rural village life. You may even be invited in for tea in a Ladakhi house. Your afternoon continues in similarly regal fashion as you watch a game of polo, which originated in the Western Himalayas, depending on the date.
Chamba Camp | Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6: Thiksey/Leh
As your trip comes to an end you’ll be driven to Leh airport to board your onward flight.

Travel on selected dates between: 15th May to the 10th October 2016  from £2,995 per person. Price includes internal return flights in India from Deli to Leh, all meals, seleceted soft drink, and the tours mentioned in this itinerary.
