Founded in 1156, the desert city of Jaisalmer (known as the Golden City) was an important defence and trade town for centuries due to its strategic position on the camel trade routes. The Jaislamer Fort is over 800 years old and has nearly a hundred turrets to defend it. Inside its walls lie the narrow lanes of the old city as well as Jain temples. The town is surrounded by the remote Desert National Park of the Great Thar Desert. The nearest airport for Jaisalmer is Jodhpur which is a 6-7 hour road journey.
