The Campania region faces the Tyrrhenian Sea and includes one of the finest coastlines in Italy. Must sees for any visitor are the cosmopolitan Amalfi coast; the marvellous islands; the Imperial Villa in Capri; the Royal Palace of Caserta with its splendid Italian gardens; Herculaneum and Pompeii and the mighty Mount Vesuvius.
Sorrento is a beautiful, precariously-perched town, which sits along a cliff with a narrow ravine splitting it in two. The views are superb and the town is steeped in history, once being ruled by Spanish sovereigns, who loved this area for its abundance of fruit, fish, birds, meat and cheese. Afterwards, in the eighteenth century, the Sorrento Peninsula was rediscovered by the Grand tour when the intellectuals of Europe, such as Nietzsche and Ibsen, first began to visit.
Nearby Capri, a short ferry trip away, has over the centuries been visited by intellectuals, artists and writers, all enthralled by its magical beauty. A mix of history, nature, worldliness, culture and events daily blend together, bringing the Legend of Capri to life. It is also home to the Blue Grotto, which once inside seems to be lit from underneath. The magnificent blue colour is due to another opening to the grotto, completely submerged, and the limestone bottom which allows in sunlight to light the water from below.
The Amalfi coast is world-renowned with its magnificient coastal drives, beautifully positioned towns which up to not long ago were only accessible by sea, and a host of culinary delights that are to be found in this region. Positano is one of these famous towns, nearly vertical in posture, and providing a breathtaking location for a villa break. The area is famous for its food, including spaghetti alle vongole (pasta with tomatoes and clams), cozze mussels, the infamous Napolitan pizza and a whole host of mouthwatering cheeses.

I am delighted with the service. I thought our situation was hopeless, but Sandrine Baker proved me wrong by finding hotels in the right places. We are all looking forward to the trip!

Best time to be there
Coastal areas and the islands are great year round, although July and August can be very hot. The arts and opera seasons are generally at their peak outside these months. August is very much a shut down month as Italians take their annual break.
