Does any other city conjure up such potent images of tangible human history existing in harmonious accord with the trappings of modern society? Glamorous bars and restaurants proffering the latest incarnation of la dolce vita juxtaposed against 2,500 years of Roman history create an incomparable and intoxicating blend that has to be seen to be understood. First time visitors will understandably gravitate towards Baroque gems such as the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, the unbridled religious fervour witnessed in the Vatican, as well as the ancient Roman icons of the Colosseum and Pantheon. However, for those with a little more time, or on a return visit, the city comes to life.
See how the other half live on exclusive Via Veneto or get up close and personal with the locals in the lively Trastevere neighbourhood. People watching is a national pastime and never more entertaining than by night, in one of the Eternal City’s many hot spots. Don’t forget that you are in the capital city of arguably the world’s best cuisine so take time to seek out some of its often well-hidden gems. Visit Pizzarium for an unforgettable slice of how it should be done, or get shoulder to shoulder in the queue at one of Rome’s many excellent gelaterias.
Rose Garden Palace
As far removed as possible from the outdated, overly stuffy brand of hotel that, for so long, was the norm for European hotels, the Rose Garden is as fresh as its name might suggest. Generous rooms, excellent food and ideal location are a given, but it’s the people that will often make a place and the Rose Garden can be rightly proud of its exceptional staff who enthusiastically make it their mission to ensure you get what you came for, be it a non-stop tour of all Rome’s classic sights or being pointed in the direction of the best that the city has to offer on the unashamedly glamorous Via Veneto.
Rocco Forte Hotel de Russie
In an enviable location, a short wander from the Spanish Steps and idyllic Piazza del Popolo, Rocco Forte Hotel de Russie is frequented by celebrities and Italian nobles alike - a billing it lives up to with ease. The charm, character and quirks of a more established hotel are all present here, underpinned by contemporary comfort, service and attention to detail. Be sure to allow plenty of time for breakfast which is an occasion in itself.

Best time to be there
Coastal areas and the islands are great year round, although July and August can be very hot. The arts and opera seasons are generally at their peak outside these months. August is very much a shut down month as Italians take their annual break.
