Venice is a city that has endured a historical litany of triumph and tragedy, rising from its marshy foundations to become a romantic labyrinth of placid waterways and sweeping bridges. A marvel of engineering, its watery beginnings belie incredible feats of industry, with marble churches and grand palaces languishing on ancient wooden piles driven into its muddy banks. Moorish and Byzantine influences abound in its stunning architecture, while its past residents including Vivaldi and Casanova can still be felt in the narrow alleyways. Easily navigable on foot, Venice is heaven for lovers of Italian gastronomy, wine and zest for life. With artistic masterpieces on every corner, look past the crowds and gondoliers to see that Venice isn’t all romance and seduction.
Art, literature and architecture are the three cornerstones of Venice’s charm: the soaring views from Campanile di San Marco are unparalleled, while the charmingly unusual architecture of Campo Santa Maria Formosa is a haven for design buffs. We recommend taking a short ferry ride to the quiet fishing village of Burano. Its twisting streets are a riot of colour, resembling a box of vivid oil paints, with little fishing boats bobbing along its narrow thoroughfare.
Famous for its lace-making, Burano retains traditional workshops still practising the painstakingly precise textile craft made with needles. While on the island, try the local wine made from the rare Venetian grape, Dorona.
Hotel Palace Bonvecchiati
Labyrinthine streets, alleys and canals, the archetypal images of Venice, surround and contrast with the contemporary design of this boutique gem. A refreshing counterpoint to the classical ubiquity of the majority of Venetian hotels, Palace Bonvecchiati offers a very different take on the Venetian experience, yet is within easy striking distance of the city’s principal offerings. Contemporary works of art, bold colours and strong lines are the order of the day here and are why we adore this lovely hotel that’s happy to stand out from the crowd.
Luna Hotel Baglioni
Location is everything. Metres from both Piazza San Marco as well as the fluvial toing and froing of the San Marco Basin and Grand Canal, Luna Hotel Baglioni offers the quintessential Venetian experience. An exceptional breakfast awaits you in the frescoed grandeur of the Salone Marco Polo; fuel for the body and mind before embarking on a day of hardcore sightseeing or people watching. The unfeasibly helpful staff will direct you to museums, galleries, boutiques or restaurants, whatever floats your gondola!

Best time to be there
Coastal areas and the islands are great year round, although July and August can be very hot. The arts and opera seasons are generally at their peak outside these months. August is very much a shut down month as Italians take their annual break.
