In Laos, the guide added trips to the morning market and an opportunity to attend a shaman ceremony she heard about when we were in the village. I've seen some events, but I'll never forget that. I gather it's pretty rare to see it - the guide had only seen it once before.

Set on a large garden estate, Amantaka is housed in graceful French colonial buildings in the UNESCO protected town of Luang Prabang. Airy and elegant throughout, the décor and furnishings reflect the town's French colonial history. This former provincial hospital is centrally located making it perfectly placed to introduce visitors to the wonders of Luang Prabang. A two minute walk and you are on the main street with a choice of boutiques, bakeries and restaurants, as well as close to the banks of the Mekong River and Luang Prabang's popular night market.
Amantaka offers 24 suites ranging in size from 70 to 120 square metres each. These include eight Suites, four Pool Suites, eight Khan Pool Suites, two Mekong Pool Suites and two Amantaka Pool Suites, all with spacious interior and exterior living areas.
Best time to be there
The cooler part of the dry season, November to February is when Laos is at its best, avoiding the torrential rains of the summer months, and the sweltering heat of April and May.
