Latin America has everything from deserts to winelands, Mayan archaeology to volcanoes, beaches to rainforests. With the Spanish influences of Quito to the breath-taking landscapes of Patagonia you are spoilt for choice. These are some of the highlights of Latin America that we believe shouldn't be missed!
Previously home to more than 2 million Mayans, Belize is a favourite destination for exploring the history left behind by this fascinating civilisation. From sacred temples to awesome pyramids, their story can be found in the form of Mayan ruins throughout the country. Plus, Tikal is just a hop across the border. Latin America is also overflowing with other snap shots of history, including the Aztec and Inca ruins.
Explore the Andes and discover deserts, glaciers and jungles all in the same mountain range. Stretching through seven countries, including Chile, Argentina and Ecuador, this part of the world is truly breath-taking. As well as stunning landscapes, you will find hidden gems within the region, such as Quito, Ecuador. Stood at 2,850 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest capital city in the world!
Hugging the Caribbean Sea, Belize is home to many beaches that will make you feel in complete paradise. With over 200 off-shore islands, you're spoilt for choice. Turtle Inn in Placencia, a small resort town, is an ideal place to rest your head whilst you enjoy the beaches. Nestled in lush gardens and just few steps from the water, each Garden View cottage is decorated with handcrafted Balinese furnishings. If you want ultimate peace and quiet, the resort's private island, Coral Caye, is the place to be.
From Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires, Latin America is home to some impressive and well-known cities. One that is often forgotten, however, is Quito. Dramatically located high above the rest and hosting one of the best-preserved historic centres, Quito was one of the first cities UNESCO declared a World Cultural Heritage Site. A perfect blend of Ecuadorian culture and a vibrant but sophisticated atmosphere, Quito is a must-visit.
Latin America culture is a fascinating combination of influences. In cities such as Quito the Spanish character oozes out, bringing with it markets, dancing, delicious foods and much more. In the more remote areas of the region you will see the wealth of culture in unique ways. A great example of this being the differences in cowboys across Latin America.
