Kuala Terengganu

Situated on a yawning estuary facing the South China Sea, Kuala Terengganu is the administrative centre and royal capital of Terengganu, Malaysia. It's also the main economic centre, located about 500 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. This is a town where the old meets new in a delightful clash, retaining strong Malay influences that mix with other cultures that landed here, thanks to its long history as a port. Because of this you can see modern multi-storey buildings sat cheek by jowl with pre-war shops and homes –surprisingly attractive despite the cluster of sterile skyscrapers, built with the city's petro-wealth. Despite this you'll still find a handful of old kampong-style wooden stilt houses hidden between the towers, and a fantastic Chinatown –one of Asia's most attractive outside of China.

In Kuala Terengganu you'll find various traditional crafts, producing everything from batik to brassware. The Central Market is an ideal place to shop for bargains, where souvenirs are plentiful. Overlooking the city is Bukit Puteri, a hill upon which it was said a Princess lived, loaning out utensils such as bowls, plates and cutlery for festive celebrations… Batu Burok Beach is an enticing strip of white sand, hemmed by leafy trees. It's a popular spot for picnicking and enjoying some of the seafood-heavy local cuisine.
