This is a gem of a small colonial house turned boutique hotel, owned by a Franco-Mexican couple and filled with artwork, photos, sculptures and books. It has just five rooms, all looking onto the central courtyard. The house used to be the Royal Custom House, hence the name, for the whole of Michoacan state when Patzcuaro was the trading centre in colonial times. The present owners have restored it to its former glory but added the right contemporary touches such as sumptuous modern bathrooms. Little touches such as lemongrass tea and pastries in your room on arrival, a guest lounge with books, piano and a delicious Mexican home-cooked breakfast make it a real haven, a few steps from the main square. The owners are also your hosts who both speak excellent English and service is professional and personal.

Once again we have thoroughly enjoyed our holiday with A&K. There was a fascinating mix of location and camp styles and the particular sequence worked very well for us. ![]()
