Experience the longest mammal migration on earth as the Pacific gray whales migrate from Alaska's Bering Sea to the warm waters of San Ignacio Lagoon on Mexico's Baja Peninsula. Please note you will be joining travellers from all parts of the world. The maximum group size will be 20 guests.
Departures: 21 & 24th February 2013
Highlights:
• Witness the gray whale migration
• See the whales and their calves
• Stay in cabanas right on the beach and overlooking the lagoon
Day 1 - Loreto, Mexico
Arrive in Loreto. Founded in 1697, Loreto was the capital of California when it was under Mexico's rule. In the evening there will be a welcome dinner and an orientation on the gray whales of Baja.
Day 2 - Loreto/San Ignacio Lagoon
Drive across the desert to the Pacific Ocean. Accommodation for the next few nights will be in beach cabanas. Overlooking the bay, they are simply furnished and are clean and comfortable. Environmental bathroom facilities are shared. The cabanas are located right on the San Ignacio Lagoon and are the best remote accommodation available to experience the Vizcaino Desert, a UN Biosphere Reserve.
Days 3 & 4 - Whale watching
Two full days to see the magnificent whales. There will be two excursions by boat of up to two hours each day. San Ignacio Lagoon is the traditional breeding and birthing grounds for the gray whales after their 5,000 mile migration from the Bering Sea of Alaska. Babies at birth can measure up to 16 feet in length. The whales are often intrigued with humans making for close encounters with the boats. Local guides will interpret their behaviour and will maximise the encounters without disturbing them. Between boat excursions, other activities available include bird watching and hiking with naturalists.
Day 5 - San Ignacio Lagoon/Loreto
There will be a final chance to visit the whales before returning to Loreto.
Day 6 - Depart Loreto
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight or extend to explore more of Mexico.
