The capital of Morocco and home to the oldest university in Morocco, as well as being the leading cultural and religious centre in the country, Fes is also home to the oldest and largest medieval city in the world.
The Bali, or the oldest quarter of Fes, was to a large degree saved by the French general, Lyautey. When the French took control of Morocco around the time of World War I, he commanded that the medieval structures be protected.
The result is that today Fes el-Bali is almost unchanged from when it was built centuries ago and donkeys and mules are the most popular form of transport as they meander through narrow, busy streets filled with small shops and local custom.
