Marrakech is a frantic circus of activity in the arid foothills of the Atlas Mountains; prepare to lose your inhibitions and sense of direction and embrace the loud, colourful city and its hurried population. Try to walk ten paces in any direction and you’ll come up against towering pyramids of spices, trundling donkey carts, piles of vibrant leather pouffes or stalls selling fragrant slow-cooked dishes to make your mouth water. Here you can lounge like a sovereign in a palatial riad, graze the stalls at Djemaa el-Fna or lose yourself in the tiny switchback alleyways of the medina, perusing the many souks as you go. If it all gets too much escape to the Ville Nouvelle for the contemporary art, restaurants and boutiques of the new town.
Djemaa el-Fna is a brilliant culture shock and immersing yourself in the unfamiliar is the best way to get your bearings. Bask in the colours at Jardin Majorelle with its famous electric blue walls, cactus gardens and bamboo passage; once owned by the French designer Yves Saint Laurent, his ashes were scattered here after his death in 2008. In the evening stop in at Café France at dusk to watch Djemaa el-Fna’s transformation, as the snake charmers make way for steaming street food outlets. Here you can sip a mint tea with the call of the muezzin as your soundtrack. Adventurers can get off the beaten track on a trip to the Atlas Mountains, just an hour from the city.
Les Jardins de la Medina
The bustling main square of Marrakech is a hive of activity day and night, but just a few minutes’ walk away you’ll discover an oasis in the chaos: the tranquil Les Jardins de la Medina. Considering its close proximity to all the sights (and sounds) of interest, the hotel is exceptionally peaceful and the rooms spacious, light and airy, opening onto terraces and balconies that are ideal for a leisurely private breakfast. We love the hotel’s cookery school, which offers lessons in the basic skills and techniques required to create authentic Moroccan dishes.
Legendary La Mamounia is a favourite of ours; a welcome retreat on the doorstep of the medina, the hotel is a decadent sanctuary decorated in traditional style with an exquisite hammam, resplendent in colourful tiles. Inside the style is half antiques hunter, half Arab-Andalusían palace, with all the modern technologies befitting a 21st century luxury retreat. La Mamounia has attracted influential guests (think Winston Churchill) for many years, thanks to its location: though it’s very central, the cacophony of sound that accompanies Morocco’s day to day life disappears as soon as you slip behind the hotel’s walls, peace only punctuated by the distant call of the muezzin guiding faithful Muslims to prayer at nearby Koutoubia mosque.
