Learn the art of big-cat conservation with a trip to the Okonjima Nature Reserve

Amid the imposing Omboroko Mountains lies the Okonjima Nature Reserve. The serenity of the vast plains here is occasionally interrupted by rocky remnants from ancient sandstone outcrops, which once covered large areas of northern Namibia. While the local name of the region can be translated as ‘Place of the Baboons’, it is not primarily primates you will find here. Instead there is a wealth of hyena, antelope and nocturnal creatures such as porcupine and badger, as well as over 250 species of bird.

Yet, for many, a trip to the Okonjima Nature Reserve is a must for their bespoke safari holiday thanks to the presence of the big cats at the AfriCat Foundation. Established in 1993 to rescue captive wildcats and carnivores, the project has since released around 1,000 back into the wild. Guides offer a unique safari experience, giving you a high chance of seeing some of these majestic felines roaming in the wild. Cheetah, leopard and lion all roam free in the reserve of Okonjima and you can see these majestic cats and learn all about their conservation at Okonjima.
