Swakopmund is the second largest city in Namibia and has a total area of 181sq km, a city on the Atlantic coast of north western Namibia. Swakopmund is a beach resort and an excellent example of German colonial architecture. Swakopmund resembles a small German village with the exception that it is situated between the arid desert and the beautiful ocean making it unique.

It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South-West Africa. It is one of the few places anywhere outside of Europe where a sizable minority of the population speaks German and has German roots. Attractions in Swakopmund include a transport museum, the National Marine Aquarium, a crystal gallery and spectacular sand dunes near Langstrand south of the Swakop River.

Outside of the city, the Rossmund Desert Golf Course is one of only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world. The city is also known for extreme sports. South of Swakopmund lies Walvis Bay surrounded by the Namib Desert on three sides and the cold Atlantic waters to the west. Walvis Bay famed for its natural harbour and fishing is the home to an incredible array of sea birds particularly pelicans. For the adventurous head out to "Dune 7" the highest dune in the area, climb to the top and be rewarded by the stunning views. This area enjoys a temperate climate with average temperature ranges between 15°C to 25°C. Rainfall is less than 15 mm per year, making gutters and drainpipes on buildings a rarity

Joanne Swinton was excellent and dealt with our numerous changes with courtesy and timely attention. Some of the places we stayed we might not have found without A&K and we would certainly return to them.
